It has been a varied experience – celebrating birthdays that is. As long as I was a child – it was mostly limited to the ‘payesh’ at home (which I would refuse to have - since it was such a gruesome milk product) and having fun at school. Turning up in colour dresses automatically meant that I was proclaiming to all and sundry that it was the day I popped out. There was the distribution of the chocolates, the birthday song performed by the class in unison, and blessings from all the teachers. It was nice.
After a certain chain of events, it so happened that I no longer celebrated birthdays- it reminded me of something I did not want to, and I preferred having a quiet day at home. Only a very few close friends who still continued to remember were the only ones who knew of the day – and they too kept it simple. The practice of colour dresses to school was done away with and birthdays were just like any other day.
With time, as with most other things, this reluctance of not making ‘it’ special also melted away. Every birthday during this phase reminded of the fact that I’m not the little boy anymore. Along came the concept of ‘GPLs’! (For the uninitiated, the acronym GPL stands for ‘G***d pe lath’ where your friends kick your ass and celebrate any joyous occasion) and ‘rapidfire’ (similar to GPLs but using hands/sandals). This was also roughly the time when Mark Zuckerberg made us socially connect with people whom we might not remember otherwise! And birthdays were no longer the same!
‘Wall’s were filled with wishes from people with whom the last interaction was also a ‘Happy Birthday’ that you wrote on their walls. Also the advent of Facebook meant that most people relied on it to remember. This necessarily meant that with the FB reminder done away with, you could still have a quiet day with those you love not to mention an easier time at the lavatory without any GPls the last night! It also meant that some of your friends and relatives will invariably bless (and wish) you later (that is only when a status/image update strikes home: P ) and rebuke you on how you could do such a horrifying act of removing the alert! However that horrifying act also ensured that you will be blessed by friends who somehow managed to remember the day and wanted to make it special in their own way. Trust me, it feels delightful.
I am not sure, but I think birthdays will never be the same as it was being a kid. It should only become more different as time progresses. A time will come when you will perhaps have to arrange your own birthday celebrations with your co-workers – much different from how it used to be in school- but with its own charm!
Probably at a certain point of your life you will forget that day (or at least treat like any other day) in anticipation of your little kiddo’s birthday. There will be a time when ecstacy or despair will be dependent on whether your son or daughter remembered your birthday. If you are truly blessed, you might even have the good fortune to celebrate the day with your grandchildren! We will all have to wait and watch how it turns out in the future. But whatever may be the age, situation and time – birthdays will always be .. err.. Birthdays!!
